on the liberal blogosphere

I've been struggling to give birth to an essay about the "netroots" for weeks, and just found something quite close to what I wanted to write over at Clemens' blog. Check it out, cyberpoliticos!

but but but...

Kos casts the battle not as white-educated-well-off Dems vs. all other Dems, but as local bottom-up vs. Washington top-down. I don't think he's concerned with whitey getting more influence, he's concerned with taking power from Washington establishment media, lobbyists, career politicians, and yes, liberal interest groups and putting it back into ordinary people's hands. He strongly supports, for example, Howard Dean's fifty state strategy as opposed to the usual fifty-stupid-TV-ads-a-second-in-each-of-the six-competitive-districts strategy. This is a good thing.

You know I'm a labor guy, but I was not the slightest bit impressed with labor's support of Joe Lieberman against Ned Lamont. Kos is right about this race, and the unions should be thoroughly rebuked for supporting Lieberman.
Ned is ten million times better than Joseph Lieberman on every possible issue.

Plus, it seems that the netroots put their GOTV where their mouth was in Connecticut. They know how to organize better than I thought, and in fact got off their fat asses. This is a good thing.

I don't want to sound like I'm wholeheatedly defending everything the netroots are about (the excessive focus on elections, the short attention span, the self-congratulatory crap that appears constantly, etc, etc), but I don't think the criticism you linked to is completely fair.

In general, I see the blogs as a force (maybe exaggerated a bit right now) to push the party to the left. This is a good thing. They are also a force for raising a ton of money for local races that no one else would have given a damn about. This is also a good thing. Even if some of them have big heads and don't support unions enough and care too much about elections, I can't see how anyone can argue that their overall effect has been negative or even neutral.
