AFL-CIO Merger Convention, 1956
Good old days. Elenor Roosevelt addresses the merger of the AFL and CIO, 1956. (L-R) James Carey, President of the International Union of Electrical Workers (IUE), George Meany, President of the AFL-CIO, Unidentified, ER, and Walter Reuther, Vice President of the AFL-CIO. James Carey Papers, Rutgers University Libraries, New Brunswick, NJ.
Ironically, Walter Reuther led the UAW out of the AFL-CIO for a short period in protest of the federation's position on the Vietnam War (amont other issues).
