lame

So, the most over-rated president in American history meets the singer of the most over-rated band in the history of popular music. A fine pair.
Their meeting, and Bono's ever-increasing ego, reminded me of an old Chumbawamba album called "Pictures of Starving Children Sell Records". A fantastic skewering of the boom of "Live Aid" style records in the 1980's, the album was full of songs pointing out that starvation is systemic, political and rooted in histories of colonialism. It also pointed to the fact that while a couple of million dollars was generated for famine relief by "We Are The World", it was jut a fraction of Michael Jackson's take-home pay.
The latest incarnation of Live-Aid is more political, and has focused on changing aid (and trade) policy. This is a departure from the 80's version which was purely an appeal for consumers to buy things that would benefit relief efforts. What is ironic, however, is that it is also far more overtly corporate-connected than ever before, with tech companies scrambling to attach themselves to the feel-goodness of it all. By all means, let's raise awareness about poverty and starvation in Africa. And kudos to Geldof for beginning to target governments and not just consumers. Let's just not forget to vote.

dammit daraka, what is the deal with picking up women with your blog?

ok, i obviously am biased in my feelings for bono...but how does meeting with george bush make bono against voting? i know that he's said that he's not endorsing anyone (and believe me, i'm as disappointed as anyone that he said that), but what's wrong with trying to convince bush that he ought to encourage our gov't to give debt relief to africa? should he not meet with him in protest? will that help out africa?

as for U2 being the most over-rated band in the history of popular music...well, that's just adopting the us against them attitude that you so often accuse the right of having.

I didn't mean to imply that he was against voting- that was meant as a general comment about the consumerist-activist-charity vs. politics divide.
As for U2 being the most overrated band ever, sorry, that's just true. I can't help that. The best U2 song ever is just, well, OK. And yet people talk about them as if they are some amazing thing. U2 filled a gap in popular music history, a late 80's/early 90's moment of low levels of musicality. Accessible yet "edgy" (forgive the pun) they were at the right place at the right time, somewhat similar to REM (another grossly overrated band). If that hadn't happened, we would look back on them as an 80's post-punk group that put out some decent, moody records and then moved on to their rightful place owning a hip club in Galway and hooking up with tourists.

Bono is a stupid, irish, self-indulgent attention whore who exploits starving kids he couldn't give 2 irish shits about in order to make more money for his overgrown empire of retro 80's fags stuck in a time warp. And as for Bush, well, he needs to get his head out of daddy's lap and stop doing the wounded cunt dance. Don't make excuses and apology speeches to cover up for mistakes a monkey with a penis for a brain could have avoided.

Just a side note in contrast to bob's feelings towards bono: fuck Africa. The reason they're so in debt is beacause they have an AIDS epidemic and they need money to open hospitals, clinics, etc. AIDS is simply nature's way of trying to control the population, if we give them enough money there is a slight possibility that they might smarten up and stop banging like wild jungle monkeys, solving the AIDS problem. Then what? They can continue to overpopulate their continent until they become so full they spill into countries that worked extremely hard to get where they are today, and destroy them; drag them down to the shit pit Africa's lying in. The best thing for Africa is the superswell under Zambia to surface and burn everything on that fucking desolate wasteland. It's just too bad that when Africa spills over the immigrants won't go to Ireland and ruin it, it might have helped Boner to realize what a retard he was (is).
